112 years since the outbreak of World War I

TIRANA, July 28 – World War I began on July 28, 1914.

The conflict started after the assassination of Austro-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand by Bosnian Serb Gavrilo Princip, a member of the Black Hand network.

The assassination ended the era of European empires and opened a bloody chapter in history. The war divided Europe into militarized zones. The Balkans and Europe became involved in a conflict that caused around 9 million deaths. The war also led to territorial changes and the creation of nation-states after the collapse of major empires.

Although Albania was not directly involved in the war, many battles took place on its territory.

After the war, a large part of the population became subject to what the source describes as an unjust exchange process. Authorities labelled them as “Muslim” and “non-Albanian” populations and expelled them under the designation “Turks.”

Later, Albania began strong diplomatic efforts to protect the rights and freedoms of its population from the injustices that had occurred, as Europe’s new political space was taking shape.
