113 years since Great Powers recognized Albanian state

TIRANA, July 29 – On July 29, 1913, the Conference of Ambassadors in London granted de jure recognition to the independent Albanian state.

The conference recognized Albania as a sovereign and autonomous state under the guarantee of the Great Powers. The decision established Albania’s international status and laid the foundations for the organization of the new state. At the same time, the source notes that the territorial settlement left a large part of the Albanian population outside the country’s borders.

As a result, the conference assigned several Albanian-inhabited regions to neighboring states, including Serbia, Montenegro and Greece. These areas included Kosovo, parts of today’s North Macedonia, sections of the northern highlands and Çamëria. In addition, the Great Powers placed Albania’s state administration and institutions under international supervision, which limited the government’s full independence.

Meanwhile, the Conference of Ambassadors met in London between 1912 and 1913 after the Balkan Wars to resolve territorial and political issues in the region, including the future of the newly independent Albania. British Foreign Secretary Edward Grey chaired the conference. Representatives from Britain, Austria-Hungary, Germany, Italy, France and Russia also took part.
