TIRANA, June 10 – Albania marks 148 years since the founding of the League of Prizren. The League stands as the most important event of the 19th century in Albanian history. It marked the start of national political organization to defend Albanian lands and identity.
The League of Prizren was founded on June 10, 1878. Albanian territories faced division at that time under decisions linked to the Treaty of San Stefano and discussions at the Congress of Berlin. Iljaz Pasha Dibra led the congress proceedings. Ymer Prizreni, Abdyl Frashëri, Pashko Vasa, Sami Frashëri, and Jani Vreto shaped the political ideas.
In addition, the League set three main objectives. It opposed the partition of Albanian territories. It supported their unification into a single vilayet within the Ottoman Empire. It also promoted recognition of Albanians as a distinct nation in Europe, regardless of religious differences.
At the same time, the League formed a National Committee. The committee acted as a provisional authority. It coordinated political, diplomatic, and military activity. Local subcommittees defended Albanian territories from neighbouring claims. Meanwhile, northern resistance proved decisive. Forces led by Ali Pasha Gucia and Hodo Beg Sokoli defended Plava, Gucia, Hot, and Gruda.
Although the League ended in 1881, it remains a symbol of national unity. It represents Albanian efforts for freedom, self-determination, and state-building.
