TIRANA, August 11 – Albania recorded a positive natural population increase in the second quarter of 2026. The country registered 218 more births than deaths, according to preliminary data from the Institute of Statistics. Between April and June, authorities recorded 5,083 births, down 3% from the same period in 2025. Deaths reached 4,865, a 3.7% decline year on year.
Regional data show marked demographic differences. Five counties recorded more births than deaths. Seven counties recorded more deaths than births. Tirana recorded the highest natural increase, with 1,033 more births than deaths. Korça recorded the lowest figure, with 265 more deaths than births.
Tirana also recorded the highest number of births, at 2,310. Gjirokastër recorded the lowest, with 66 births. Nine counties recorded an increase in births from the second quarter of 2025. Three counties recorded a decline. Dibër recorded the strongest increase, at 14.6%. Tirana recorded the sharpest decline, at 12%.
Meanwhile, Tirana recorded the highest number of deaths, at 1,277. Kukës recorded the lowest, at 97. Durrës saw the largest increase in deaths, at 10.4%. Kukës recorded the sharpest decline, at 22.4%, compared with the second quarter of 2025.
