According to the head of the Emergency Department, Ardian Dajti, the number of visits has increased significantly this season, reaching between 200 and 220 cases a day. He considers this one of the busiest seasons since operations began at the new hospital.
“I have been working here for many years, both as head of the Emergency Department and in surgery, and I believe this has been the busiest summer in terms of visits. When we first started at the new hospital, we initially had 70–80 visits, then they increased to 100. As tourism activity began to grow, 150 became normal, and now we have reached 200–220 visits, which has genuinely created an overload,” said Ardian Dajti, head of the Emergency Department in Shkodra.
Among the cases treated in the Emergency Department have also been tourists who suffered injuries while exploring the mountainous areas of northern Albania. According to Dajti, on certain days, more than one injured tourist has been admitted.
The head of the Emergency Department says that most trauma cases are linked to falls and slips on difficult terrain. According to him, some tourists travel without guides or people familiar with the area, increasing the risk of accidents.
“Among trauma cases, we mainly see that, in addition to road accidents, there are many cases involving tourists who appear to be travelling without guides or companions. They have accidents, fall from heights or slip, so most of the injuries are fractures. On average, there is more than one case per day,” Dajti added.
The number of staff in the department has also been increased to cope with the higher number of patients. Doctors are calling for greater caution when travelling in mountainous areas, particularly among tourists who choose to explore unfamiliar terrain.
