48 years at the loom: Krujë artisan weaves history into every thread

In the heart of the Pazari i Vjetër i Krujës, Dëshira Maja has worked for 48 years. She creates carpets, blankets, and bags with Albanian motifs. First, she continues a family tradition. She learned the craft from her mother. She still follows the same traditional methods today.

Moreover, she works with great patience. She selects wool, dyes it naturally, and weaves thread by thread. In addition, she explains the process step by step. She says each carpet takes days or even weeks to finish.

Furthermore, she works with her husband, Sali Maja. He supports the production process and helps with materials. As a result, their small shop runs as a family business. They dedicate long hours every day to the craft.

However, she worries about the future of the tradition. She says young people show little interest in learning the craft. Also, she notes that most customers are tourists. They stop to watch, take photos, or buy handmade pieces.

Finally, she says she will continue working. She wants to preserve Albanian tradition through every carpet she creates.
