$6 billion gas deal highlights Albania’s strategic role in region and Europe

TIRANA, April 28 – U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle described Albania as a steadfast partner of the United States. She said the country holds strong strategic importance for the Balkans and Southeast Europe. She spoke at the Prime Minister’s Office during the signing of an energy security agreement between Albania, the United States and Greece.

Guilfoyle said the $6 billion natural gas deal shows Albania’s growing role as a connector in the Western Balkans. She added that the initiative strengthens regional cooperation. It also supports energy security and a more sustainable future for Southeast Europe.

At the same time, she said the agreements include a memorandum of understanding for a key energy project. It covers the study, development and construction of an energy facility, including a gas plant. She noted that this reflects Albania’s focus on sustainable energy for its citizens.

Meanwhile, she said cooperation in the energy sector strengthens both energy and national security. She added that stability and prosperity depend on reliable and diversified energy supply.

Guilfoyle said president Donald Trump strongly supported energy security. She noted that his policies promoted diversified energy supply for the United States and its allies. As a result, she said today’s agreement reflects that approach and strengthens cooperation.

In addition, she said Albania and Greece share strong ties beyond geography. She noted shared security interests, close human links and growing economic cooperation. She added that joint efforts between the United States, Albania and Greece benefit the Western Balkans.

Finally, Guilfoyle said the United States supports a more connected and energy-secure region. She stressed that Albania plays a key role in this vision. She called for continued cooperation to strengthen economies, improve security and bring people closer.
