Albania and Greece aim to strengthen customs cooperation. Their plans include joint border management, electronic data exchange and easier trade and movement between the two countries. General Director of Customs Besmir Beja met his Greek counterpart, Dimitrios Bourikos, in Tirana for the 14th Bilateral High-Level Meeting.
The meeting covered joint border management, trade procedures, Green Lanes and SEED+, digitalisation and electronic data exchange. The two sides also discussed stronger action against smuggling and illegal trafficking. At Kakavija, Albania has completed its part of the electronic data exchange system. The system now sends data to the Greek customs administration. The two countries plan to extend the system to other border crossings.
The system will improve risk analysis and speed up procedures. It will also make customs controls more efficient. The administrations discussed traffic flows and operating hours at shared border crossings. They also agreed to strengthen cooperation between their customs structures and develop further the Sarandë-Corfu link.
Meanwhile, the two sides exchanged experience on European Union customs digital systems, interoperability and risk management. They agreed to continue technical cooperation, training and expert exchanges. They also plan further steps to fully operationalise Green Lanes and expand electronic data exchange.
