Eric Wendt has officially taken office as the United States Ambassador to Albania, bringing a confirmed ambassador back to the helm of the U.S. diplomatic mission in Tirana after nearly three years.
This Saturday, Wendt presented his credentials to President Bajram Begaj, officially beginning his mandate in Albania. He succeeds Yuri Kim, who completed her term in June 2023.
Nominated by U.S. President Donald Trump and confirmed by the Senate on August 6, 2026, Wendt comes to Albania after a career of more than 34 years in the U.S. military, with experience in security and special operations.
But who were the diplomats who previously headed the U.S. Embassy in Tirana?
According to official data from the U.S. Department of State, the ten most recent ambassadors before Eric Wendt were:
- Yuri Kim – U.S. Ambassador to Albania from January 2020 until 2023. She was the last ambassador before Wendt, and following her departure, the post remained without a confirmed ambassador for an extended period.
- Donald Lu – Ambassador from January 2015 until September 2018. During his tenure, U.S.-Albania relations focused particularly on judicial reform and the fight against corruption.
- Alexander A. Arvizu – Ambassador from December 2010 until January 2015.
- John L. Withers – Ambassador from August 2007 until August 2010.
- Marcie B. Ries – Ambassador from October 2004 until June 2007.
- James F. Jeffrey – Ambassador from October 2002 until May 2004.
- Joseph A. Limprecht – Ambassador from September 1999 until May 2002.

Diplomatic relations between Albania and the United States were restored on March 15, 1991, while the U.S. Embassy in Tirana opened on October 1 of the same year. Before Ryerson’s appointment, Christopher Hill briefly served as chargé d’affaires from October to December 1991, but he was not an ambassador.
With Eric Wendt now at the helm of the diplomatic mission, the United States once again has a confirmed ambassador in Tirana after more than three years. During his Senate confirmation hearing, Wendt stated that his priorities in Albania would include the rule of law, the fight against corruption and organized crime, as well as strengthening cooperation in defense and security.
