President Bajram Begaj convened a meeting of the National Security Council on Monday, focusing on recent developments and their impact on the country’s security institutions.
In addition to the members designated by law, representatives of the General Prosecutor’s Office and the Special Prosecution against Corruption and Organised Crime (SPAK) were also invited to attend.
According to a statement from the Presidency, discussions focused on strengthening inter-institutional cooperation, coordination with international partners and allies, and restoring and reinforcing public trust in institutions.
At the conclusion of the meeting, it was stressed that security institutions should not compete with one another but should cooperate in the interests of national security.
“When it comes to national security, institutions do not compete with one another. They have different responsibilities, but they serve the same interest: the security of the Republic of Albania,” the meeting’s conclusions stated.
The Council also underlined the importance of ensuring that judicial investigations are conducted independently and respected by all institutions.
“Justice investigations must be conducted entirely independently and respected by everyone. Individual cases must not turn into a crisis of confidence in the state and its security institutions,” the statement said.
Discussions also focused on the need for greater transparency, accountability and institutional oversight. Institutions were urged to demonstrate to citizens that the system is capable of correcting itself and protecting the public interest.
The National Security Council also stressed that Albania has the institutions, international partners and allies, as well as the professional capabilities, needed to address security challenges.
The National Security Council is an advisory body to the President of the Republic and does not make decisions. Its meetings are held behind closed doors.
