The new United States Ambassador to Albania, Eric Wendt, has begun his first official meetings after taking up his post in Tirana. Wendt met with Prime Minister Edi Rama as part of his initial contacts with the leaders of Albanian institutions.
Wendt officially began his diplomatic mission on September 26, when he presented his credentials to President Bajram Begaj. Following the ceremony, the head of state also held a one-on-one meeting with the new US ambassador.
With Wendt’s arrival in Tirana, the United States once again has an appointed ambassador in Albania after a period of more than three years, during which the US Embassy was headed by Nancy VanHorn as Chargé d’Affaires following the end of Yuri Kim’s tenure.
Wendt comes to Albania with an extensive military and security background. He served for more than three decades in the US military and held senior positions in special operations and international security.
The meeting with Rama is expected to be among the new ambassador’s first political engagements at the start of his tenure. The US mission in Albania is also expected to focus on security issues, the fight against corruption and organized crime, as well as strengthening bilateral cooperation.
