On National Cultural Heritage Day, the Albanian Parliament expressed its appreciation for everyone who works to preserve and pass on the country’s cultural heritage from one generation to the next.
In a social media post, Parliament highlighted the work of Vendim Kapaj, who holds the title “Grand Master” and has dedicated more than 50 years to Albanian music and traditional sounds.
“With the fyell and the çifteli in his hands, he has preserved a part of the spirit of Albanian music,” Parliament said in its post.
Parliament also highlighted Kapaj’s rare technique of playing the fyell with his teeth.
According to Parliament, the sound created through this ancient Albanian tradition has traveled beyond the country’s borders. It has become part of the soundtrack of director Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film “The Odyssey”, alongside Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Göransson.
“From Albanian tradition to one of the biggest productions in world cinema. This is what heritage looks like when people keep it alive, preserve it, pass it on and earn admiration around the world,” Parliament said.
