Albanian customs chief discusses modernisation with European Union officials

Albanian Customs General Director Besmir Beja held talks with senior European Commission officials in Brussels on customs reform and European Union standards. The meetings focused on modernising systems, strengthening controls and developing professional capacity. Beja presented the progress of Albania’s customs reforms and its priorities for the European integration process.

The talks covered Albania’s draft Customs Code, which is under public consultation. They also addressed a new strategy for information technology systems and stronger risk analysis in customs controls. Other topics included wider post-clearance controls, market security and professional training for customs staff.

European Commission officials highlighted the progress made by Albanian Customs and stressed the need to continue reforms as Albania prepares for European Union membership. Cooperation aims to create a more modern and digitalised customs administration, while facilitating procedures and strengthening controls and security at Albania’s borders.
