President Bajram Begaj welcomed US Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Dick Durbin to the Palace of Brigades on Friday. Begaj awarded them the high distinction of “Commander of the Supreme Order of the Eagle.”

The senators were accompanied by US Ambassador to Tirana Eric Wendt.

During the meeting, Begaj praised the strategic partnership and enduring alliance between Albania and the United States, based on shared democratic values and a commitment to Euro-Atlantic security.

He also expressed gratitude for continued US support for Albania’s Euro-Atlantic integration, the strengthening of democratic institutions, judicial reform, and the enhancement of defence capabilities.

Begaj stressed the importance of continued cooperation within NATO, as well as the importance of the United States’ presence and engagement in the Western Balkans in maintaining peace, stability and the region’s Euro-Atlantic prospects. He also highlighted the US contribution to Kosovo’s security through the KFOR mission.

Special attention was given to the Board of Peace, with Albania supporting international initiatives aimed at promoting dialogue and cooperation.

“Excellent political cooperation creates opportunities for concrete collaboration in areas such as energy, investment, defence, cybersecurity and infrastructure,” Begaj said.

He praised the US senators’ significant contribution to strengthening the strategic partnership between Albania and the United States, as well as their continued support for Albania’s Euro-Atlantic integration and for peace, security and stability in the Western Balkans.

President Begaj also highlighted the senators’ support for the Western Balkans Democracy and Prosperity Act, which has been enacted into law and aims to strengthen economic, democratic and institutional cooperation across the region.
