“Kuq e Zi”: New Children’s Book Combines Poetry, History and Games

Albanian children’s author Rovena Rrozhani has released “Kuq e Zi,” a new book that introduces young readers to Albania’s Independence, the Albanian language and the role of Albanian-language schools in preserving national identity.

The book pays tribute to Ismail Qemali and the patriots who fought for Albania’s independence. It also explores lesser-known facts about Qemali’s life and work, drawing on archival material from the Vlora family. His great-grandson, Darling Vlora, shares personal family accounts in the book’s foreword.

“Kuq e Zi” features 15 poems and 15 games and activities, including puzzles and crosswords. It also presents 20 historical facts and curiosities about Independence, the Albanian language, the development of Albanian-language education and Qemali’s life. Photographs and archival documents help children explore the country’s past, while the book concludes with Albania’s Declaration of Independence.

Rrozhani hopes the book will strengthen children’s connection with their homeland and encourage them to explore their cultural heritage. Children’s author Adelina Mamaqi edited the book, while associate professors Dritan Egro and Albana Ndoja served as scientific editors.

Rrozhani is known for several works of Albanian children’s literature, including “Fani në kërkim të dritës,” “Lëndina e arushëve,” “Rozi dhe domatja kërcimtare” and “Sekreti i fshehur në libra.”
