Private operators account for 92.7% of Albania’s rail freight transport

Private operators accounted for 92.7% of Albania’s rail freight transport, measured in tonne-kilometers, in 2025, according to the national statistics agency INSTAT. The figures appear in its report, “Transport in Figures 2025”, which highlights the dominant role of private companies in the sector.

Rail freight transport reached 17 million tonne-kilometers last year. Private operators handled 88% of freight measured in tonnes and 92.7% measured in tonne-kilometers. State-owned operators accounted for the remaining 7.3% of freight transport measured in tonne-kilometers.

Coal and lignite, crude oil and natural gas dominated rail freight, accounting for 88% of the total. Recycled raw materials, municipal solid waste and other waste represented 11.6%. Base metals and fabricated metal products accounted for the remaining 0.4%.

Albania’s operational railway network extends across 253.1 kilometers. It includes the Durrës–Elbasan, Kufi–Gjorm, Fier–Vlorë and Rrogozhinë–Fier lines. The network’s total length remained almost unchanged between 2023 and 2025.

Meanwhile, 4,146 passengers travelled by rail in 2025, marking a 46.4% decline from the previous year. INSTAT’s report also notes that Albania recorded no railway imports or exports during the year.
