Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Italy’s short-term priority is to strongly support Albania and Montenegro’s progress towards European Union membership. She made the remarks in an address to the Senate ahead of the European Council meeting.
Meloni said enlargement and the Union’s internal reforms would feature in a strategic discussion. She argued that a reunited Europe needs strong political consensus to remain competitive, influential and secure, starting with the Western Balkans.
Meanwhile, she stressed that each candidate country has its own timetable and conditions. She said enlargement must follow merit and mutual responsibility, with candidates implementing reforms and gradually aligning with European rules.
However, Meloni argued that the European Union must recognise progress without delay through concrete steps. She said Albania and Montenegro’s success would send a wider message across the region: accession is a real prospect, reforms bring results, and the Union must deliver when candidates meet their obligations.
