Piro Vengu: Vandalism Serves No Cause

Former Defence Minister Piro Vengu has reacted following acts of violence reported for the second consecutive day during protests outside the Ministry of Education.

In a social media post, Vengu stated that students have the right to protest and express their concerns, but stressed that violence and vandalism serve no cause.

“I believe Albania is blessed with its young people. Students love Albania, they love their homeland. They do not set it on fire!” Vengu wrote.

He emphasised that young people do not need political representatives to dictate their positions, underlining that students have their own voice, reasons and right to protest, as well as the right to choose not to participate in demonstrations.

According to the former minister, students’ concerns and aspirations deserve to be heard, while anger and dissatisfaction cannot justify acts of violence.

“Anger and dissatisfaction do not justify such acts. Those who blindly resort to violence and then hide behind students are exploiting their cause,” he said.

Vengu also criticised university lecturers who, according to him, threaten to lower the grades of students who do not participate in protests, as well as MPs who attempt to gain political advantage from young people’s concerns.
