The General Director of the State Police, Skënder Hita, has provided an update on the number of police officers injured during the protests, stating that a total of 132 officers have been injured in Tirana, Shkodër and Lezhë.
According to Hita, five police officers were injured today alone, one of whom suffered multiple fractures to his mouth and jaw. Hita condemned the attacks on police officers, listing stones, stone slabs, metal objects and Molotov cocktails among the items used by protesters.
“We have seized several objects used by protesters to attack police officers, resulting in numerous injuries. Five officers were injured today alone. One of them suffered serious injuries to his mouth and jaw, including multiple fractures.
I do not condone injuries to protesters, nor can I accept the fact that police officers have been injured just as seriously as protesters. Under no circumstances can police officers, who are carrying out their duty to protect institutions, lives, property and businesses, be subjected to such unprecedented mass attacks.
We have a very large number of police officers who have been injured and wounded.
I want to emphasise that during the days of demonstrations, police officers have been attacked with stones, stone slabs, metal objects, metal pellets fired from slingshots, pyrotechnic devices, Molotov cocktails and other objects.
As a result of the violence directed against police officers, mainly in Tirana but also in Shkodër and Lezhë, 132 police officers have been injured. Some of them are still receiving medical treatment in hospital.
In order to ensure public order and safety, as well as the protection of lives and property, I call on those carrying out these acts of violence to immediately stop their unlawful actions.
At the same time, I urge citizens to distance themselves from violent individuals, who do not represent the students or their aspirations,” Hita said.
