Archbishop Peragine reacts to protests: Albania does not deserve to relive the wounds of its past

The Archbishop of Shkodër-Pult, Monsignor Giovanni Peragine, has reacted to the protests that have taken place in Albania in recent days, stressing that the country does not deserve to relive the painful wounds of its past.

In a statement, he called on the authorities to listen to citizens, open the door to dialogue, and take concrete decisions to address their demands.

The archbishop said that, at a time when trust in institutions has been shaken and social peace is at risk, the country’s leaders must assume their responsibilities and act without delay.

Full statement by Archbishop Giovanni Peragine:

“The protests of recent days undoubtedly reflect deep social dissatisfaction that cannot be ignored. For four months, a significant number of citizens have been protesting peacefully against a system that favors some while penalizing many others, yet their voices have not received the attention and responses they deserve.

This does not justify violence, which must be clearly and unequivocally condemned, but it highlights the responsibility of the authorities to listen to citizens, open the way for dialogue, and decisively address the causes of dissatisfaction.

Only through justice, equality, and sincere dialogue can a fairer society be built, where no one feels excluded and where the common good takes precedence over personal interests.

The responsibility of the authorities is measured not by statements, but by concrete decisions. No private interest can be placed above the good of the country, and no authority can replace the obligation to respond to citizens.

When trust in institutions is shaken and social peace is put at risk, it is the duty of those in power to assume their responsibilities and act without delay, courageously making even difficult decisions if the good of our country requires it.

Albania does not deserve to relive the painful wounds of its past,” Archbishop Peragine stated.
