The European Commission has condemned violent incidents in Tirana and other Albanian cities, stressing that freedom of assembly and expression are fundamental rights that must be exercised peacefully.
In a statement on Sunday, the Commission denounced arson, attacks on state institutions and damage to public and private property. It also stressed that authorities must respond to violence lawfully and proportionately.
“Violence has no place in a democratic society,” the Commission said, adding that those responsible must face due legal process.
The Commission also welcomed the Albanian authorities’ commitment to protecting the right to protest. It stressed that, as an EU candidate country making significant progress towards membership, Albania should address grievances through constructive dialogue and peaceful engagement.
