The Chair of the European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with Albania, Marco Tarquinio, and the European Parliament’s Standing Rapporteur for Albania, Andreas Schieder, have expressed concern over the escalation of protests in Tirana.
In a joint statement, they condemned violence, attacks on institutions and the destruction of property, while calling for an investigation into reports of excessive use of force by the police.
The MEPs stressed that respect for the rule of law remains a key criterion and a mandatory condition for Albania’s progress towards European Union membership.

European Parliament Delegation for Relations with Albania and the European Parliament’s Standing Rapporteur for Albania
On behalf of the European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with Albania and as the European Parliament’s Standing Rapporteur for Albania, we express our deep concern over the recent events that have taken place in the country, particularly in Tirana.
We condemn the violent escalation of these protests, the attacks on public institutions and the destruction of public and private property. We call on protesters to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from any acts of violence, as such actions do not contribute to a solution and have no place in a democracy.
