The OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) has expressed concern over reports of violence during protests in Albania, as demonstrations in Tirana enter their eighth consecutive day.
In a public statement, ODIHR called on all parties to maintain peace, stressing that law enforcement authorities must refrain from the unlawful or disproportionate use of force against protesters.
The OSCE institution also emphasized that any instances of unlawful use of force must be promptly and independently investigated.
The statement comes amid heightened tensions as anti-government and anti-corruption protests continue in Tirana, with clashes between demonstrators and police. The situation has raised concerns about the handling of public assemblies and respect for citizens’ right to protest peacefully.
ODIHR stressed that maintaining public order must go hand in hand with respecting fundamental rights and freedoms, while accountability for any unlawful use of force must be ensured through independent investigations.
