Judges’ association condemns attacks on courts

The National Association of Judges of the Republic of Albania condemned violence during recent protests. It called for immediate measures to protect justice institutions and prevent pressure on judges. The association described attacks on the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction as unacceptable in a democratic society. The attacks included arson at the Supreme Court and damage to judicial files.

It warned that these acts threatened judges, court officials and administrative staff. They also disrupted the normal functioning of justice and affected citizens awaiting rulings. The association stressed that freedom of expression and assembly could not justify violence against institutions or their staff. It raised concerns about inadequate preventive and protective measures by the State Police. It urged state institutions and political actors to show restraint and respect judicial independence. The association also called for effective measures to protect courts and their personnel.
