Socialist Party Seeks Suspension of 20 Democratic Party MPs Following Chaos in Parliament, Including Six for 60 Days

The Socialist Party (SP) is seeking disciplinary measures against 20 Democratic Party (DP) MPs following tensions and physical confrontations during Thursday’s plenary session of the Albanian Parliament.

In a request addressed to Parliament Speaker Niko Peleshi and the Secretariat for Procedures, Voting and Ethics, the SP parliamentary group is calling for the MPs to be suspended from attending plenary sessions and parliamentary committee meetings for periods ranging from 10 to 60 days.

According to the Socialists’ request, the most severe measure, a 60-day suspension, is being sought for six DP MPs: Flamur Noka, Belind Këlliçi, Fidel Kreka, Edi Paloka, Besart Xhaferri and Luçiano Boçi.

Meanwhile, the SP is requesting a 10-day suspension for 14 other Democratic Party MPs: Gjin Gjoni, Bardh Spahia, Albana Vokshi, Elda Hoti, Xhelal Mziu, Gent Strazimiri, Enno Bozdo, Kastriot Piroli, Kliti Hoti, Flamur Hoxha, Arjan Ndoja, Ivi Kaso, Zija Ismaili and Blendi Himçi.

In the document, the Socialist parliamentary group alleges that opposition MPs disrupted the normal proceedings of the session, blocked the parliamentary podium and engaged in actions that, according to the SP, undermined parliamentary order and the voting process.

According to the Socialists’ account, the incidents began at the start of the session when MP Flamur Noka approached the podium, struck it and then directed insulting remarks at the Parliament Speaker.

The SP further alleges that Belind Këlliçi damaged equipment at the podium, while Flamur Noka physically attacked Socialist MPs and damaged electronic voting equipment.

The request also names Belind Këlliçi, Besart Xhaferri, Edi Paloka, Fidel Kreka and Luçiano Boçi, who, according to the SP, insulted ruling majority MPs and struck them with water bottles.

The Socialists argue that these actions constitute violations of parliamentary ethics and disciplinary rules. They are therefore calling for the application of Articles 63 and 65(1) of Parliament’s Rules of Procedure, as well as Article 6 of the MPs’ Code of Conduct.

The request is a proposal for disciplinary measures, not a final decision to suspend the MPs. It will be reviewed by the relevant parliamentary bodies.
