Albania holds 2026 National Water Rescue Championship

The Albanian Water Rescue Federation held the 2026 National Water Rescue Championship with support from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport.

The competition tested speed, technique and endurance through events that combine sport with life-saving skills. A total of 34 competitors took part. The championship has taken place annually since 2019, with men and women competing in 5 events over distances of 50 and 100 meters.

Tourism, Culture and Sport Minister Blendi Gonxhja stressed the importance of this training during the summer season. In a social media post, he said beach safety required vigilance and rapid action by lifeguards at observation posts along the coast. He added that the ministry supported initiatives to strengthen prevention and water-rescue skills.

More than 300,000 people worldwide die from drowning each year, according to the figures cited in the source. That amounts to 30 deaths every hour. The source said prevention, investment in public beach safety and trained lifeguards at swimming areas could significantly reduce these deaths.
