Albanian Parliament Approves Amendments to Bank of Albania Law with 84 Votes

The Albanian Parliament has approved amendments to the Law on the Bank of Albania with 84 votes in favor. The changes provide special legal protections for the governor, restricting the possibility of taking measures against the governor without parliamentary authorization.

Under the amendments adopted during Thursday’s plenary session, the governor cannot be placed under arrest, nor can searches of the governor’s residence or person be conducted without authorization from Parliament.

The adoption of the law required a qualified majority. A total of 84 MPs took part in the vote, including 81 from the Socialist Party and three from the Social Democratic Party (PSD).

Ceno Klosi was the only Socialist Party MP absent from the vote.

The approval of the amendments by a qualified majority paves the way for the implementation of the new provisions, which establish legal safeguards for the governor of the Bank of Albania.
