EU Ambassador Presents Progress Report, PM Rama: Albania Enters Final Stretch of EU Accession Negotiations

Prime Minister Edi Rama and the European Union Ambassador to Albania, Sofia Moreira de Sousa, held a joint press conference on Thursday, one day after the European Commission published its progress report on Albania.

During his remarks, Rama said the report showed that Albania’s European future is now entirely in its own hands.

“This is the best progress report Albania has ever received, which also reflects the positive impact of your leadership of the EU Delegation in Albania.

For a long time, the story of Albania’s European journey was defined by what we were waiting to happen. Candidate status: yes, no, when? Opening accession negotiations: yes, no, when? Approval of interim benchmarks: yes, no, when?

Today, the report published yesterday by the European Commission defines a new narrative. It is no longer about what we are waiting to happen, but about the steps we must take to complete this journey.

In other words, Albania’s European future is now entirely in our own hands. This is the report’s main message.

Albania is entering the final stretch of its EU accession negotiations. The report shows that, compared to a year ago, Albania’s level of preparedness has increased significantly in at least 20 negotiating chapters.

It highlights progress in areas ranging from the economy and digital transformation to energy, education, and the alignment of national legislation with EU standards,” Rama said.
