Albanian Customs takes part in regional operation targeting illicit financial flows

TIRANA, Nov 6 /ATA/ The closing meeting of the Regional Operation “NELSON”, aimed at tackling the illegal movement of cash and high-value goods, took place at the headquarters of the Southeast European Law Enforcement Centre (SELEC) in Bucharest.

The Albanian Customs Administration, working alongside the State Police, actively participated in the operation, which was conducted in two phases in March 2026 and brought together customs and law enforcement authorities from SELEC member countries.

During the operation, inspections at border crossing points were stepped up to identify cases involving the non-declaration of cash, bearer negotiable instruments and high-value goods, as well as to prevent illicit financial flows.

The meeting, chaired by Chavdar Georgiev, SELEC Director of Operations, and attended by representatives of the UK’s HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), provided an opportunity to review operational results, exchange experiences and identify ways to strengthen regional cooperation.

The Albanian Customs Administration remains committed to strengthening border controls, preventing money laundering and combating organised crime through inter-institutional cooperation and active participation in international operations.
