Hoxha: Regional cooperation and European integration must go hand in hand

Albania’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Ferit Hoxha, has called for stronger regional cooperation as a key driver of European integration.

Hoxha made the remarks at the ministerial meeting of the Central European Initiative (CEI), held in Bucharest, Romania.

He stressed that regional cooperation had become more important than ever as Europe faces major changes in its security and geopolitical landscape.

“The CEI remains a valuable platform for strengthening dialogue, connectivity and cooperation across our region, while advancing the European aspirations of its member countries,” Hoxha said.

He underlined that regional cooperation and European integration must move forward together, arguing that neither the Western Balkans nor Europe can reach their full potential while the region remains divided and outside the European Union.

“Removing trade barriers, connecting our energy systems and transport corridors, recognising professional qualifications, strengthening digital connectivity and working more closely on security do not create an alternative to the European Union. Instead, they prepare our region to function as part of it,” Hoxha stated.

The minister also stressed that stronger economic ties would make the region more resilient, while closer relations between societies would build trust and reinforce security.

He added that stronger people-to-people connections could turn geographical proximity into lasting partnerships.

Ultimately, Hoxha said, a more connected, cooperative and stable Western Balkans would contribute to a stronger Europe.

“This is the Europe we need: more connected, more secure, more resilient and, ultimately, united as a whole,” he concluded.
