Rama: We must move from red to green in public procurement! We are not yet within a solid progress framework

Prime Minister Edi Rama has stated that by 2027, Albania should have achieved concrete results in order to join the European Union. Among other things, he said that significant progress has been made in public procurement, but added that the country is still not within a solid framework of good progress.

According to him, the “challenge of challenges” is food safety and overall consumer protection. Rama emphasized that the inspection reform must continue and expand to other inspectorates to ensure high-quality human resources.

“What stands out to me is the necessity to move from red to green in public procurement, where we have made significant progress, but we are still not within a proper framework of good progress, which implies fully meeting this aspect within the required conditions.

I bring this to attention because it is crucial that the work already started for further modernization of public procurement with AI must continue. By 2027, we must have achieved this objective.

Another issue that caught my attention, and we have discussed it, is financial control—progress there is also limited. Financial reform is necessary.

The challenge of challenges is food safety and overall consumer protection. Therefore, the inspection reform must continue, and political leadership of the reform across all ministries is key in protecting it from partisan interference. It is essential that what has been implemented with the National Food Authority (AKU) continues to expand to all other inspectorates to guarantee high-quality human resources,” he said, among other remarks.
