TIRANA, April 1 – Chairman of the Socialist Party parliamentary group, Taulant Balla met today with the rapporteurs for Albania at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Ionuț-Marian Stroe and Paweł Jabłoński.

Balla assured that the parliamentary majority is ready to move forward together with the opposition on both electoral and administrative-territorial reform.

The meeting also focused on the majority’s legislative initiative on referendums, seen as a direct exercise of the people’s sovereignty. Balla emphasized that this is a constitutional right, currently limited by the absence of a specific law.

During the discussions, Balla highlighted that “Albania guarantees and respects the rights of minorities, and regarding media freedom, the Parliament recently approved the decriminalization of defamation for journalists.”

He added, “Albania continues with determination on the path of reforms toward European Union accession.
