PM Rama: Integrations process is not slowing down, Albania faces historic opportunity

TIRANA, April 2 – Prime Minister Edi Rama said Albania does not face conditions of a slowing integration process. During a discussion with young students on the country’s European Union accession negotiations, he stressed that much of the information circulating in media reports is often inaccurate and misleads the public.

Rama highlighted that Albania is not slowing down but is at a historic moment where fortune smiles on the country and its citizens. He criticized media narratives suggesting delays, describing them as often unreliable. “For the first time in history, fortune smiles on Albanians and Albania. There is no slowing of the integration process,” he said.

He explained the functioning of the accession process, noting it passes through two levels. The first is the European Commission, an objective body that issues tasks for candidate countries. The second is the European Council, where leaders of all member states review the commission’s report and decide by consensus whether to open negotiations. Rama recalled past delays caused by political vetoes, noting that objections from a member state blocked progress despite having no issues with Albania itself.

Rama stressed that the integration process is moving and the door to the European Union remains open. He said institutions and citizens share responsibility for keeping it so. “The process slows when a country makes mistakes or political objections arise. Today, we do not face these conditions. The door is open, and we must not allow it to close. We must maximize the years ahead to ensure it remains fully open,” he said.

The prime minister’s remarks come amid ongoing efforts to accelerate reforms and maintain momentum in Albania’s European Union accession process, reinforcing the message that citizens and institutions play a crucial role in sustaining the country’s progress.
