International children’s book day celebrates reading and creativity

TIRANA, April 2 – At the discussion held today at schools and libraries, children marked International Children’s Book Day. The date honours the birthday of Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen. His famous stories include The Emperor’s New Clothes, The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling, The Little Match Girl, and Thumbelina.

The day aims to deepen children’s connection with books. Literary circles, publishers, and libraries encourage reading aloud. Children can read to their friends or listen as an adult shares a favourite story. Families can also make bookmarks together as part of the celebrations.

This year’s edition carries the theme “Plant stories and the world will bloom.” The theme highlights the power of books to inspire a better world. It also promotes environmental awareness, reflecting the idea that caring for children and caring for nature share the same values.

Cyprus wrote the official message for 2026 and designed the poster dedicated to children’s books. Events worldwide mark the day with activities that foster imagination, learning, and curiosity. Organisers hope that celebrations will help children enjoy reading and explore new ideas.
