TIRANA, April 3 – Interior Minister Besfort Lamallari presented key security reforms linked to Albania’s European Union integration process. Speaking at a press conference, he outlined progress under Chapter 24 on justice, freedom, and security.
He said authorities have achieved measurable results in several areas. In particular, he highlighted stronger action against organised crime, improved border security, and more effective migration management. At the same time, he stressed that Albania continues steadily on its path towards the European Union, with the State Police playing a more active role in European security.
In this context, Lamallari pointed to the creation of the Asset Recovery Office as a major step in tackling money laundering and economic crime. He explained that specialised teams now carry out deeper investigations in close cooperation with prosecutors, leading to more asset seizures. Meanwhile, authorities have also advanced drug policy by establishing a dedicated office and expanding the focus beyond arrests to rehabilitation.
Alongside operational measures, Lamallari underlined legal progress. Amendments to the Criminal Code address seven European Union directives covering arms trafficking, human trafficking, child protection, drug trade, and border security. He noted that European institutions have recognised these developments. In addition, Albania has strengthened cooperation with Europol and Eurojust, where it is represented by a liaison prosecutor.
Looking ahead, the minister said Albania has aligned its visa regime with European Union policy and will introduce further changes. He stressed that full alignment with EU law remains essential. He described EU integration as both a security and geopolitical project.
Finally, Lamallari said all institutions remain engaged in advancing Chapter 24 negotiations. He called the completion of the technical process a top government priority and reaffirmed Albania’s long-standing goal of joining the European Union.
