Today, 42 Americans took the oath to serve as Peace Corps volunteers in Albania for two years.
The U.S. Embassy announced that Nancy VanHorn and Mirela Kumbaro attended the ceremony.
VanHorn said the Peace Corps reflects the spirit of ordinary citizens stepping forward to serve. She called it “America at its best, building meaningful partnerships and lasting friendships.”
She praised the U.S. as generous, hardworking, creative, and warm. She said Peace Corps volunteers embody these qualities.
VanHorn thanked the Ministry of Education and all local partners — teachers, school leaders, officials, and civil society — for working alongside the volunteers. She said their efforts bring the Peace Corps mission to life in classrooms and communities across Albania.
She also thanked Albanian host families who welcomed volunteers into their homes during training.
Since Albania first invited the Peace Corps in 1992, nearly 1,000 Americans have lived and worked in communities across the country. They taught English, supported youth welfare, and strengthened local organizations. VanHorn said today’s group proudly continues this legacy.
She called Albania one of the best places in the world to serve as an American diplomat or volunteer.
