The Union of Albanian Journalists (UGSH) has raised concern about the failure to enforce the law on the use of the Albanian language in North Macedonia. It views this as a violation of fundamental rights and constitutional principles.
In a press release, UGSH stated that current practices in public life, administrative procedures, and political relations between ethnic groups show a lack of respect for the right to use the Albanian language. Moreover, the Union emphasized that this right is a key requirement for European integration and peaceful coexistence.
UGSH noted that North Macedonia, as an EU candidate country, cannot accept a situation where the right to use one’s language is conditional in a multi-ethnic society. This right is guaranteed by the Constitution. In addition, it is essential for the stability and well-being of the country.
However, UGSH highlighted that current practices in public life, administration, and especially political communication between ethnic groups still reflect outdated attitudes. As a result, these practices reveal persistent nationalist thinking among some Macedonian authorities and political representatives.
Furthermore, UGSH called on Macedonian media and journalists to report objectively on all cases involving violations of this right. This includes actions by high-ranking state and government officials.
In addition, UGSH expressed support for the protests announced by Albanian students. It urged journalists to give these protests wide coverage in both national and international media.
Finally, UGSH backed the Union of Albanian Students. It also called on Albania’s top institutions and its representatives in international organizations to take action. They should ensure the protection and enforcement of the right to use the Albanian language in the neighboring country.
