National Food Authority launches fish processing plant categorization

TIRANA, April 9 – The National Food Authority (AKU) has launched a program to categorize fish processing and standardization plants across Albania.

AKU Director Blerina Gjylameti said the project aims to ensure food safety, increase market transparency, and bring the sector closer to European Union standards. The initiative runs from April to July 2026.

Plants will be assessed on legal and technical compliance. The classification will help businesses improve quality, invest in technology, and compete more effectively. Authorities will use the system to guide inspections and support sector development. The program also opens new opportunities for exports.
