Lt. Gen. Kingji hosts Italian counterpart; Albania a reliable partner in international operations

TIRANA, April 10 – Chief of the General Staff of the Albanian Armed Forces Lieutenant General Arben Kingji held talks in Tirana with his Italian counterpart General Luciano Portolano. The visit focused on defence cooperation and NATO-related priorities. Both sides also reviewed regional security developments.

Kingji presented recent developments within the Albanian Armed Forces. He outlined modernization plans and efforts to strengthen operational capabilities. He also stressed ongoing work to meet NATO standards. In this context, he highlighted Albania’s commitment to defence reform and interoperability with allied forces.

At the same time, Kingji expressed appreciation for Italy’s sustained cooperation. He said Italian support remains important in military education, training, and joint exercises. He also pointed to continued collaboration in NATO missions and international operations.

In response, General Portolano thanked Kingji for the reception. He praised the role of the Albanian Armed Forces within NATO structures. He also described Albania as a reliable partner in international operations and a stabilising factor in the Western Balkans.

Furthermore, both military leaders discussed regional and broader security challenges. They expressed a shared commitment to deepening bilateral defence cooperation. They also reaffirmed coordination within NATO frameworks to address emerging security risks.

During the visit, General Portolano also toured the Special Operations Regiment. He met Commander Colonel Ajet Jata and received a briefing on the unit’s structure and capabilities. The presentation covered equipment, training, and operational readiness of the elite unit.

Earlier in the day, Portolano also met Defence Minister Ermal Nufi. Both sides highlighted the importance of Albania–Italy cooperation in strengthening regional peace and security. They reiterated their joint commitment to addressing shared security challenges within international defence cooperation frameworks.
