Former New York City mayor Eric Adams has been granted Albanian citizenship and has received an Albanian passport. The decision was formalized through a special decree signed by the President of the Republic, Bajram Begaj.
So far, no additional details have been made public regarding the reasons or specific procedures that led to this decision. According to the content of the decree, the citizenship was granted following a request submitted by Adams himself.
Adams had previously visited Albania in October 2025, where he also held a meeting with Prime Minister Edi Rama. During his time as mayor of New York City, he had on several occasions expressed appreciation and closeness toward Albania and the Albanian community.
