TIRANA, April 12 – Orthodox believers gathered at the Resurrection of Christ Cathedral to celebrate Easter with the traditional midnight liturgy. The call “Come receive light from the unsetting light” marked the start of one of the most solemn services in the Orthodox calendar.
Large numbers of worshippers attended the ceremony, holding candles as they awaited the Resurrection moment. As the service progressed, hymns filled the cathedral while believers prepared to receive the sacred light. They then carried the flame home, symbolising the presence of divine light in their lives.
At the centre of the ceremony stood Archbishop Joani, head of the Albanian Orthodox Autocephalous Church. He shared a message of faith and reflection, stressing that those who carry Christ in their hearts lack nothing. He also called for peace and compassion in a world facing division, greed, and conflict.
At midnight, he proclaimed “Christ is risen,” prompting a unified response from the congregation. Immediately after, the traditional hymn celebrating the Resurrection echoed throughout the cathedral, marking the spiritual peak of the service.
Following the liturgy, celebrations continued throughout Easter Sunday. Believers exchanged the greeting “Christ is risen, truly risen,” reinforcing a message of hope, renewal, and shared faith across communities.
