TIRANA, April 12 – Orthodox believers across Albania celebrate Easter today, marking one of the most important days in the Christian calendar. The feast reflects faith, renewal, and hope, while bringing families and communities together across the country.
The roots of Orthodox Christianity in Albania date back to the early centuries of the Christian era. Over time, communities built strong religious and cultural identities, especially in the south and southeast. Despite challenges during Ottoman rule, the faith preserved its presence through churches and traditions. A key turning point came in 1922, when the Albanian Orthodox Autocephalous Church declared its independence.
Today, churches across the country host Easter services attended by large numbers of believers. Landmarks such as the Resurrection of Christ Cathedral and the Ardenica Monastery stand at the centre of these celebrations, reflecting a rich religious and cultural heritage.
The celebration follows weeks of preparation through Great Lent and Holy Week. At midnight, believers gathered to mark the Resurrection, sharing candlelight as a symbol of hope. The traditional greeting “Christ is risen” continues to echo today among families and communities.
Easter Day continues with family visits and traditional meals. Red eggs, which symbolise life and renewal, remain central to the celebration. In this way, the holiday blends spiritual meaning with living traditions, highlighting a cultural legacy that continues across generations.
