Sports Weekends in Gjirokastër: Growing Interest Among Youth, Keeping Them Away from Phones

Sports activities organized during weekends in Gjirokastër are attracting increasing interest from children and young people. Championships in various sports are held at the city’s Sports Palace and are followed with enthusiasm. Training sessions in sports such as basketball, volleyball, and badminton are eagerly attended by children and youth as a great way to spend their weekends.

“I have been bringing this sport here to Gjirokastër for three months now, and as you can see, children enjoy it and come to play willingly. Even though they try it for the first time, they want to return again—it’s a beautiful game,” said Valter Lani, a badminton coach.

“At first, I came to watch my friends play, but then I liked it a lot and started learning little by little. It has kept me away from my phone because I used to spend hours on it, and it has helped me develop. It’s a very fun game,” said one of the participating girls.

“I like playing sports because it keeps me away from my phone. It’s very nice, and we come every weekend,” said a young participant.

“It’s a very good thing, especially nowadays when children mostly stay at home using their phones and rarely go outside. Sports are a great activity both for the mind and physical health, so it’s the best way for a child to develop,” said Vladimir Lani, a parent.

Practicing different sports helps children and young people maintain a healthy body and an active, open mind.
