Director General of Albanian Customs meets World Customs Organization chief, focus on digitalisation and EU integration

TIRANA, April 17 – Director General of Albanian Customs Besmir Beja met World Customs Organization Secretary General Ian Saunders in Brussels during the Annual Meeting of European regional customs leaders. The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation and accelerating customs digitalisation.

The Albanian side highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at modernising customs administration and aligning with international standards. Beja underlined Albania’s commitment to advancing digital services and improving institutional capacity in line with European Union integration requirements.

Discussions covered key priorities linked to EU accession, including legal alignment, development of new information technology systems and the introduction of artificial intelligence in risk analysis. Beja also stressed the need to strengthen human resources to support the integration process.

World Customs Organization Secretary General Ian Saunders confirmed continued support for Albania’s customs administration, particularly in trade facilitation and operational efficiency. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deeper cooperation and further reform implementation in the customs sector.
