Rama: Food safety, the most complex challenge of the EU integration process

Prime Minister Edi Rama held a meeting this Tuesday with food business operators, where he emphasized the importance of the European Union accession process as a key challenge for ensuring food safety in the country.

Rama described food safety as one of the most difficult challenges of the negotiations, stressing that the role of the European Union is essential in guaranteeing standards and protecting citizens’ health.

He underlined that this process is not simply about fulfilling obligations toward others, but about gaining an “irreplaceable body of knowledge” that helps Albania build European standards in service of citizens’ health and well-being.

“This process is linked to the most complex challenge of all accession processes, which is the food challenge. Here lies the great importance for us of the EU accession process, which many mistakenly see as a process of fulfilling tasks for the sake of others. In fact, this process is about acquiring an irreplaceable body of knowledge that we must import from the EU into Albania, in order to build a European state for Albanians and standards that serve the health of every Albanian family,” Rama stated.

He emphasized that without this process and the reforms that accompany it, it would be impossible to achieve safety standards and ensure the country’s development and prosperity.

“When we talk about food safety, we are talking about a challenge that cannot be achieved unless we possess the knowledge to build the entire institutional and policymaking framework. European standards are not chains on our feet, but wings that help us rise higher,” the Prime Minister said.
