PM Rama: European standards in food safety a challenge to achieve in EU membership negotiation process

TIRANA, April 21 – Prime Minister Edi Rama said food safety represents one of the toughest challenges in Albania’s European Union accession talks. He made the remarks during a meeting with food business operators in Tirana.

Rama linked food safety reforms directly to Albania’s goal of EU membership within the decade. He said the accession process should not be viewed as external obligations, but as knowledge transfer and institutional development.

He said EU integration supports the creation of European-level standards for Albanian citizens. Rama added that food safety has direct effects on public health and household wellbeing.

The prime minister said Albania must align its legislation with European Union rules and modernise veterinary and laboratory systems. He stressed that effective enforcement and efforts against informality depend on implementation, not only legal texts.
