Albania targets 900 agrifood facilities in EU accession food safety push

TIRANA, April 21 – Albania has launched inspections of more than 900 agrifood facilities as part of efforts to align food safety standards with the European Union. Minister of State and chief EU membership negotiator, Majlinda Dhuka said the process forms part of accession talks and broader sector reform.

Officials outlined the initiative at a food safety meeting in Tirana attended by Prime Minister Edi Rama, Agriculture Minister Andis Salla, EU Ambassador Silvio Gonzato, and other senior representatives. Dhuka said Albania has opened negotiations across 33 chapters and now focuses on technical preparations.

The government said the inspection programme targets slaughterhouses, fish processing units, dairy producers, and egg facilities. Authorities aim to assess hygiene standards across production, storage, transport, and retail chains under EU-aligned rules.

Dhuka said compliance reforms will proceed gradually toward 2030, with upgrades in infrastructure and control systems. She added that alignment with EU standards would unify rules for domestic consumption and exports, expanding access to the European market.
