EU Ambassador Gonzato: Albania enters decisive EU negotiation phase

Silvio Gonzato says Albania enters a decisive phase in EU accession negotiations, with food safety as one of the most complex reforms.

Then, he speaks at a meeting with food business operators attended by Edi Rama. He explains that food safety protects citizens, strengthens consumer trust, and ensures fair competition.

Next, Gonzato states that progress depends not only on drafting laws but also on implementing EU-aligned systems and applying risk-based inspections.

After that, he highlights the importance of accredited laboratories and compliant food operators that meet European standards consistently. He also emphasizes proper categorization of businesses to improve inspection efficiency.

Moreover, he notes that sectors such as milk and meat face significant gaps compared to EU requirements. He stresses that improving raw milk quality is essential for competitiveness in the European market.

However, he warns that EU harmonization creates both opportunities and challenges. He says businesses must invest in infrastructure, hygiene, equipment, and training.

In addition, he calls for stronger support for small businesses and greater transparency throughout the reform process.

Finally, he confirms that the EU provides €12.5 million through the “EU for Food Safety” project and concludes that Albania must take decisive next steps with strong political leadership and cooperation between institutions and the private sector.
