Blendi Gonxhja declares Monastery of the Archangels a Category I cultural monument

Blendi Gonxhja announced that the Monastery of the Archangels in Derviçan has been declared a Category I “Monument of Culture”. He said authorities will soon begin work to restore it and make it livable again.

The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport said the decision was made in cooperation with the Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage in Gjirokastër. It also confirmed the legal protection of the entire complex, including its surrounding structures.

The approved project now opens the way for implementation works. These works aim to restore the monastery’s function and revive it as a living cultural and community space. They will also strengthen cultural tourism routes in the region.

Specialists will carry out a full restoration of the deteriorated structures. They will clean the site, consolidate the masonry, and rebuild traditional elements such as roofs, floors, and wooden structures.

The Monastery of the Archangels is one of the most important spiritual and architectural complexes in Derviçan. It reflects centuries of monastic tradition and stone construction heritage.

Gonxhja said that together with local authorities and partner organizations, the ministry will work to restore, protect, and promote historical sites. He added that these projects will also support sustainable local economic development.
