Briken Calja crowned European champion in clean and jerk in Batumi

TIRANA, April 23 – Albanian weightlifter Briken Calja won the European title in the clean and jerk at the European Championships in Batumi, Georgia. He competed in the 79-kilogram category and lifted 187 kilograms in the discipline.

Calja also secured the silver medal in the combined total, lifting 340 kilograms overall. He finished just one kilogram behind Russia’s Georgi Serobian in the two-lift classification.

Prime Minister Edi Rama congratulated Calja, describing the result as a deserved success that raises Albania’s flag on the international stage. He highlighted Calja’s gold in the clean and jerk and silver in the total in a social media message.

Fellow Albanian competitor Erkand Qerimaj did not complete a valid total in the same category. He recorded 152 kilograms in the snatch and failed to register a successful attempt in the clean and jerk.
